From Haunting to Hero: Why Ghost Is the Secret Weapon of the Thunderbolts (MCU Deep Dive)

Of a team of broken soldiers and reformed killers, she’s not the loudest. Even so, she isn’t the strongest nor the intended survivor. However, that makes her the most dangerous person there.

This is the story of Ghost. She is the MCU’s most underrated and unpredictable force, portrayed by Hannah John Kamen. As the Thunderbolts line-up of Marvel storms into the theaters, one question is lurking in the shadows:

What about Ghost? What makes her the most unique member of the Thunderbolts?

Entering her story would be super phasing.

Ava Starr: The Ghost of the MCU

Before there was a storm, there was silence.

Ava Starr, known by the MCU as Ghost, isn’t the typical superhero, nor has she ever been a villain. She was not born from a lab experiment or one of the army’s special programs. She is the living victim of a disaster.

When her father’s experiment with Quantum Technology got out of control, it not only killed him but also left her molecules divided and spread apart. Ava’s death was averted; however, she was still in a state of disconnection from everyday reality, and as such, she was forced to go through the uninteresting activities of ghosting the world she was familiar with once. Through each step she takes, pain constantly runs in her body. With instability, she breathes every breath.

Living but just hanging by a thread. From beseeching S.H.I.E.L.D of her situation but, instead, being forced to be an enforcer of them and shadow of a person, she transformed into a ghost in the dead of night - a mission tool, not a life to be saved. It was the agony that chiseled her.

How Dangerous Is Ghost?

Put aside the overused superheroes such as Iron Man, etc. Ghost isn’t present at all on this list.

In contrast to the strength of Red Guardian and the experience of Bucky Barnes, Ghost is the one with the spectral precision that cannot be compared to anything else:

Invisibility : No one will see her in the blink of an eye. Intangibility : Bullets can go through her. The walls are of no use.

Lethal Close Combat: Through her training, she has gained killer experience, and she can be ruthless when she has no choice.

Untrackable : She is not detectable by thermal imaging, cannot be tracked by footprints, and gives no notice in advance.

Should the matter of one being a Thunderbolt be taken as a force unsophisticated in nature, then, indeed, a Ghost is the one who operates with the precision of the sharpest blade. Once hidden, one will cast her to ensure no one ever knows what happened.

Physics is the science created and defined by humans, so clearly, her presence means that science is wrong. At the same time, she is a shadow of the quantum world—to attack the enemies and disrupt the system digitally from one end to the other. But none of these give her the real power of a Character. It is her force of will.

Was Ghost Ever Truly a Villain?

Now, let’s try to re-conceptualize the concept of “villain.”

There were moments in the fight against Ant-Man when we saw Ghost appear. She also attempted to take the quantum particles out of Janet. Was she at all villainous?

Did she at all feel like a monster to you?

Ava’s actions were affected by the degree to which she tried to survive. She was not so much of a power chaser as she was a pain escapade enthusiast. A whole century of molecular instability was the reason she was given, besides the fact that she was penultimate; that is, she was virtually a dead man walking, whereas the quantum realm, to some extent, might have given her the opportunity for the new life. Although stealing was unforgivable, based on her point of view, there was no other way to acquire hope for a new life.

Unlike traditional MCU villains driven by greed or the desire for supremacy, Ghost was driven by one of the most characteristically human emotions: the fear of disappearing without leaving any trace.

Why Did Ghost Decide to Become a Hero?

The same question can also be asked of the Thunderbolts in this paragraph.

After Ant-Man and the Wasp, Janet van Dyne stabilized the condition, temporarily affecting Ghost. Ava, of course, after that, didn’t make a return to the MCU… until now. Ghost agreed when Valentina Allegra de Fontaine talked to her about it. But she wasn’t drawn by any glory. Not even with redemption in her mind.

Ghost’s main reason for joining was that she believed she could make a difference while no others could.

Moreover, she was joining because the pain did not subside—it merely changed in its form. Someone else can be a member of this very, very worst history of deaf people. The Thunderbolts were her source of life in a way. Not to save the world but to survive it how she wanted. Ghost is neither an extraordinary nor an ordinary woman among the misfits, outcasts, and morally dubious ex-assassins; she does not stand out as the odd one. She fits in for once.

What exactly is Ghost’s benefit for Thunderbolts?

It’s not a good team without a secret weapon. For the Thunderbolts , Ghost is the secret one.

This is her unique set of abilities, which no other group member has. Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Ghost:

1. Unmatched Stealth Capabilities

Ghosts can penetrate any fortified building completely unnoticed. Their phasing ability lets them pass through sensors, cameras, and magical barriers. Where espionage is needed, they are the best players.

2. Accurate Infusion & Extrusion

If you had to pick an object of high value in another country without the local government noticing, which would be the perfect time and place to go? Lady Ghost is your answer. It’s more like a one-woman black ops team.

3. Sabotage

She can break the walls and destroy the systems in it. Take her to a nuclear reactor and say RIP to your electricity grid.

4. Psychological Warfare

Her mere existence terrifies her opponents. One can’t fight what one can’t even see—or touch.

5. The Carnival of Adaptability in The Chaos of Daredevils

While others do not think trust is the primary strategy, and her allegory is like the wind. She is soft, like a gust.

Is She Worthy to Become a Thunderbolt? Deserve?

How about we discuss the fundamental nature of the Thunderbolts team: a second chance for those who might otherwise have no place in life? It is a team of walking contradictions. It is a redemption project with teeth.

Bucky Barnes was an assassin who was brainwashed. Yelena was trained as a child to be a killer. Red Guardian still holds on to the past of an ideology that no longer exists. And Ghost?

Ghost did not have the opportunity to be granted a first chance. She was born in tragic circumstances; she was transformed into a product of a system where she was viewed as expendable. Finally, she was rejected by the world that she struggled to get back to.

Is there any person who could be considered more deserving than Ava Starr?

And maybe the most heroic thing she’s done isn’t infiltrating enemy bases or going toe-to-toe with Avengers. Maybe it’s choosing to stand still—to stop running. To fight with the broken instead of fighting to survive.

Why Ghost MCU Is a Character to Watch

The MCU has always been a universe of larger-than-life icons: gods, geniuses, kings. Ghost, however, is a stark contrast. She is the victim of a quantum discovery that has severe implications for her life. The system failed to deal with her, quickly forgetting about her.

According to John-Kamen, she demonstrates her Character. / In her performance, she plays the Character with the oozing coldness of a robot yet the tragic vulnerability of a human.

In the next Thunderbolts movie, we might see her transformation and becoming a traditional hero. We might see her become not a traditional villain but something entirely new. Something created in the void where it is necessary to abandon the concepts of good and evil and only focus on survival.
